Dallas Cowboys' DaRon Bland signs four-year contract worth $92 million
Dallas Cowboys Extend Contract of All-Pro Cornerback DaRon Bland
The Dallas Cowboys have made a significant move in the NFL, extending the contract of All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland. The new deal, worth $92 million over four years, includes $50 million in guaranteed money. With an average annual salary of $23 million, Bland's new contract makes him the fifth-highest paid cornerback in the league, according to Spotrac.
Bland, who turned 26 this year, has been a standout player for the Cowboys since being drafted in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft from Fresno State. In his career, Bland has played 41 games (30 starts) and has recorded 14 interceptions.
The 2023 season was a record-breaking one for Bland. Despite missing the first 10 games due to surgery to repair a fractured foot, he returned to set an NFL record by returning 5 of his 9 interceptions for touchdowns. This not only broke his own career interception touchdown record of 5, but also led the league in interceptions for the season.
The Cowboys' decision to extend Bland's contract may signal their confidence in his abilities and long-term contribution to the team. This move comes three days after the Cowboys traded two-time All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers, indicating a shift in their roster strategy.
Before the extension, Bland was set to earn $5.346 million in 2025, his last year under his rookie contract. The new contract could potentially impact the Cowboys' salary cap situation for future seasons.
In the 2023 season, Bland had 41 tackles in 7 games (all starts). It's worth noting that Bland was drafted alongside Michael Waletzko, Darrick Clark, and Jack Ridgeway III in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Waletzko played college football at the University of Minnesota.
Bland's career interception total includes 9 interceptions from the 2023 season and 5 from previous seasons. However, due to his foot injury in 2023, Bland has yet to play a full season in the NFL. Despite this, his impact on the field has been undeniable, and the Cowboys are clearly betting on his future potential.
