Danish authorities halt operations of 83 online gambling platforms

In an ongoing effort to maintain a safe and regulated gambling environment within Denmark, the Danish Gambling Authority, or Spillemyndigheden, is taking significant steps to identify and block unlicensed gambling websites targeting the Danish market.

Licensing Control and Blocking Unlicensed Sites

Spillemyndigheden's primary strategy involves licensing control. Only operators with a valid Danish license can legally provide gambling services. The authority continually monitors operators for compliance with Danish law and regulatory standards.

In addition, Spillemyndigheden works with internet service providers to block access to websites that do not have a Danish license but target Danish consumers. This blocking ensures player protection and market integrity.

Player Protection Tools

One of the key tools Spillemyndigheden employs is ROFUS, Denmark’s national self-exclusion registry. This system prevents registered players from accessing all licensed gambling sites, demonstrating the authority's active role in monitoring and controlling gambling access.

Identifying Illegal Gambling Sites

Spillemyndigheden uses automated searches and relies on reports from citizens and businesses to identify unlicensed gambling sites targeting the Danish market. These sites are often found to have lenient age verification requirements and may offer games that particularly appeal to children and young people, such as skin betting.

Court Authorization and Increased Efforts

This is the tenth time Spillemyndigheden has secured court authorization for such measures. Director Anders Dorph has intensified efforts to shut down illegal gambling sites, and the Danish District Court has consistently supported these efforts.

The rate at which illegal gambling sites are blocked in Denmark has increased, from once a year to twice a year. As a result, the cumulative number of blocked gambling sites in Denmark now stands at 359.

Protecting Vulnerable Groups

Children and young people are identified as a vulnerable group in relation to illegal gambling sites. Spillemyndigheden can seek court approval to implement site blocking measures if an operator persists in its activities despite requests to desist.

In summary, Spillemyndigheden's actions are aimed at minimizing the period during which Danish players are exposed to illegal gambling. By identifying unlicensed gambling sites, implementing licensing control, blocking unauthorized sites, and employing player protection tools, the authority is working tirelessly to protect Danish consumers and ensure compliance with gambling laws.
