Data consolidated into a single digital hub for urban information
The university town of Marburg has launched a new data and information service, "Marburg by the Numbers". This innovative service aims to provide a wide range of data and statistics about the town, catering to various target groups such as interested citizens, politicians, media, companies, teachers, students, and researchers.
The service gathers data from surveys, stock data from the city administration, city works Marburg, housing construction company GeWoBau, and regional statistical offices. It is divided into four main areas: Environment and Climate, Life in Marburg, Economy and Work, and Mobility and Traffic.
Under "Life in Marburg", users can find the population development of the past ten years, including births, deaths, or arrivals and departures. The "Mobility and Traffic" section offers insights into the development of publicly accessible E-charging points in the city area and the total charging capacity available. A link leads to the city's geoportal "Marburg in Maps" for more detailed location information.
In the "Education and Participation" section, users can find the number of Marburg schools and students, with 23 municipal and 11 private schools attended by nearly 14,000 individuals. Data on the Marburg adult education centre (vhs) and the city library are also provided. Under "Safety and Order", a diagram visualizes fire department deployments, and a timeline provides information on traffic accidents since 2015.
The service also includes external live data, such as weather, climate, and air quality data from the German Weather Service (DWD). It is based on existing dashboard solutions from the cities of Münster and Aschaffenburg, benefiting from their open-source approaches.
"Marburg by the Numbers" is fully usable in mobile view, making it accessible for users on the go. The implementation costs for the service are approximately 12,000 euros (gross), with annual maintenance and operating costs, including solutions for barrier-free access, at around 1,500 euros (gross).
The further coordination lies with the statistics department of the city's economic development. Interestingly, in the past five years, over 3,200 homes have been built in Hessen, including Marburg, with over 1,000 projects currently under construction, with a focus on need-based areas. However, specific numbers for Marburg in 2025 have not yet been determined.
The city's portal is available for adaptation under an open-source license for other municipalities. Subscribing to the newsletter of the University City of Marburg allows for regular receipt of important information from the town hall and city life via email. "Marburg by the Numbers" is the most comprehensive municipal data dashboard in Hesse.
