The Josef Albers Museum Quadrat in Bottrop is set to shine a spotlight on both the artist and the museum with the arrival of two new acquisitions. The donated works, a unique reproduction of the Smyrna carpet designed by Anni Albers in 1925 and a drawing titled DR XVI, created in 1974, have been generously gifted by the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Bottrop.
These new additions join the museum's existing collection, which includes the world's largest museum collection of Josef Albers' works. Prior to this donation, the museum only had one work by Anni Albers, Intersecting (1962).
Anni Albers (1899-1994) was a pioneering artist and designer who revolutionized textile art. Her works are characterized by innovative combinations of form, colour, and structure, often featuring complex geometric patterns. Albers experimented with new materials and techniques to create unique tactile and visual experiences.
The two new acquisitions are now on display at the museum, offering visitors a rare opportunity to witness the creative genius of Anni Albers. The Smyrna carpet reproduction, a testament to Albers' early career, and DR XVI, a captivating drawing from her later years, showcase the breadth and depth of her artistic journey.
The museum's collection also boasts a focus on geometric abstraction, colour painting, photography, and sculpture, making it a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts.
Mayor Bernd Tischler paid tribute to the two new acquisitions during a media event on August 28, 2025, expressing his delight at the expansion of the museum's collection. Curator Julius Osman also expressed his excitement about the arrival of the works and their immediate display to the public.
The next major exhibition on Anni Albers, titled "Anni Albers: Constructing Textiles," will take place at the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern from November 7, 2025, to February 22, 2026. This exhibition is set to further highlight the enduring impact of Albers' legacy, which continues to inspire artists and designers today.
The two donated works arrived in Bottrop via Frankfurt from the USA, and are currently on display at the museum with free admission. The exhibition is expected to further highlight the artist and the Bottrop museum, offering a unique opportunity for art lovers to immerse themselves in the world of Anni Albers.
