Day 2, Pachamama Celebration Year 2025: Is Dairy Consumption Eco-Friendly and What Are Its Ecological Consequences?
The annual Day of Pachamama, a date that invites people to give thanks and care for Mother Earth, will see a unique initiative this year. Fundación Veg, a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting ethical and sustainable living, has launched a campaign to reflect on the environmental impact of dairy consumption.
The campaign proposes a challenge: going a week without consuming dairy products. Known as the "One Week Without Dairy" challenge, it is an initiative that coincides with the Day of Pachamama, taking place on August 1st.
Jessica Bon Denis, the director of communications at Fundación Veg, explains, "This challenge is an opportunity to discover new ways of eating and potentially adopt a healthier lifestyle. It's possible to live without dairy and maintain a balanced, complete, and healthy diet."
Livestock is responsible for nearly 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and the dairy sector accounts for approximately 4% of these emissions. Producing one liter of cow's milk can require up to 1,000 liters of water, while alternatives like oat or soy milk use up to 10 times less. This strong ecological impact is one of the reasons behind Fundación Veg's campaign.
In Latin America, where dairy consumption remains high and is culturally ingrained, these figures invite deep reflection on the sustainability of our food systems. At least 75% of the Latin American population suffers from lactose intolerance, according to a report by The Food Tech.
To participate in the "One Week Without Dairy" challenge, visit www.semanasinlacteos.com and register for free. Participants will receive free resources such as shopping lists, recipes, meal plans, and tips to help them successfully complete the challenge. Fundación Veg also offers information, tips, and the accompaniment of a committed community to a more ethical and sustainable lifestyle during the challenge.
Pachamama represents abundance and balance with nature. The way we produce and consume food today breaks this balance. By participating in the "One Week Without Dairy" challenge, individuals can contribute to a more sustainable future while also discovering new culinary possibilities.
