DCU's blueprint for a cinematic universe doesn't need to mimic Marvel's model – horror films such as The Conjuring have consistently excelled at constructing such universes.
The Conjuring Universe, a successful horror franchise, is nearing its conclusion with the release of "The Conjuring: Last Rites." This ninth film, directed by Michael Chaves, marks the end of 'Phase One' of the universe.
Originating in 2013 with the release of the first Conjuring film, the universe has since expanded to include popular titles such as Annabelle, The Conjuring 2, The Nun, Annabelle Comes Home, and The Nun II. Unlike some expanded universes, viewing these films in a specific order is not a requirement to understand the story.
One of the most memorable characters from The Conjuring 2 was The Crooked Man, who featured in a scary sequence. Despite this, a spinoff was eventually cancelled.
The Conjuring Universe shares similarities with Universal Pictures' 1940s series, featuring familiar horror archetypes in new settings. Just like the monsters in Universal's series, Godzilla and Kong team up in The MonsterVerse, a horror-adjacent franchise currently in operation.
In the 1940s, Universal's second wave of horror series included films like Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman, where monsters fought, teamed up, or betrayed each other. Similarly, The Conjuring Universe uses the expanded universe formula to switch between various pieces of horror iconography.
However, unlike some franchises, The Conjuring Universe does not typically rely on complex supernatural explanations. Instead, it loosely bases its stories on the alleged investigations of real-life paranormal researchers Ed and Lorraine Warren.
As "The Conjuring: Last Rites" hits theatres, fans can find reviews of the film online. The universe, despite its success, provides few lessons to the horror genre as a whole. Yet, its system for wrangling in new series feels just as effortless as the Universal Pictures' monster mash formula of the 1940s.
With the conclusion of "The Conjuring: Last Rites," the first phase of The Conjuring Universe comes to a close. The future of the franchise remains to be seen, but for now, horror fans can enjoy this latest addition to the series.
