Deadly Accident on BAB 2 Claims One Life, Three Critically Injured Near FW Hannover
In an unfortunate incident, a serious traffic accident occurred on the westbound direction of the A2 motorway towards Dortmund, near the Varrelheide rest area (North) in Hannover-Lahe, on Saturday evening at 17:29.
The accident involved a collision between a VW Golf and a parked truck, resulting in one fatality and three severely injured individuals. The driver of the truck was unharmed during the accident.
Two of the accident victims were trapped in the wreckage of the VW Golf. The rescue of the trapped occupants was a complex operation, requiring the lifting of the trailer of the truck and pulling the wreckage out from under the trailer using a winch. The passenger was successfully rescued, while the driver was pronounced dead on site by the on-site doctor.
The rescue effort involved a large number of emergency services, including a fire engine from the professional fire brigade, the Misburg local fire brigade, a fire service crane truck, the rescue helicopter Christoph 4, and special vehicles for heavy rescue operations.
The three injured individuals were taken to hospitals in Hannover for further treatment. The A2 motorway in the westbound direction was completely closed due to the landing of the rescue helicopter.
No information is available yet on the exact ages of the accident victims and the amount of damage. The traffic accident investigation department of the police has initiated investigations into the cause of the accident.
Besides the professional fire brigade of Hannover and the Misburg fire brigade, the Kampfmittelbeseitigungsdienst Niedersachsen (Ordnance Disposal Service of Lower Saxony) was involved in the operation near the accident site on the A2, specifically regarding safety and evacuation measures following a World War II ordnance discovery near Misburg.
