Deadly Accident on Lisbon's Gloria Funicular: 15 Casualties Reported
In a shocking incident, Lisbon's popular tourist attraction, the Gloria funicular railway, derailed and crashed on Wednesday, leaving at least 15 people dead and 18 others injured.
The funicular line, which opened in 1885 and connects Lisbon's downtown area with the Bairro Alto, is operated by the municipal public transport company Carris. It provides service to both tourists and local residents.
Footage from the site shows the destroyed yellow tram-like funicular, while video footage shows the other car of the Gloria line jolting violently when it derailed, with several passengers jumping out of its windows. Emergency workers were seen pulling people from the wreckage.
Carris claims that all maintenance protocols, including monthly, weekly, and daily inspections, have been carried out. However, the exact cause of the derailment is yet to be determined. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa lamented the accident and expressed hope for a determination of the crash's cause.
The name of the accident investigator involved in the investigation of the Gloria Funicular accident in Lisbon is Helena Pereira. Police investigators are inspecting the site, and the prosecutor general's office has announced a formal investigation.
Carlos Moedas, the mayor of Lisbon, described the incident as tragic. Five people were reported to be gravely injured. The Gloria line transports around 3 million passengers annually, with each car of the Gloria line able to carry approximately 40 passengers.
Some foreign nationals were among the dead. The car at the bottom of the line was apparently undamaged in the derailment. President Rebelo de Sousa and Mayor Moedas have expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
