Refugee populations are experiencing a decrease in numbers across local governments. - Decline in Refugee Population Observed by Local Officials
In the heart of Germany, the state of Thuringia has seen a shift in the occupancy rates of refugee accommodations over the past few months.
In Gera, there are currently 478 places in community accommodations and 1,349 in individual accommodations, while the community accommodation in the district of Gotha, which housed only people from Ukraine, has been closed. The number of arriving refugees in Jena has significantly decreased, but the city reports an occupancy rate of 97 percent for its accommodations.
Erfurt, another city in Thuringia, has around 2,400 places for accommodation, three quarters of which are in community accommodations. The city, along with Jena, reports a relatively consistently high occupancy of their accommodations.
In recent months, cities like Erfurt and Jena have seen a decline in refugee arrivals but have maintained a high occupancy rate in group accommodations. This trend is also visible in the district of Hildburghausen, where community accommodations are 70 percent occupied and decentralized accommodations are 90 percent occupied.
However, not all districts in Thuringia are experiencing this relaxation in occupancy. The Kyffhäuser district reports a decrease in newly arriving refugees but faces problems with accommodation due to the tense situation on the housing market. Of the 1,394 places in the district, 1,050 are occupied, and currently, there are still 405 places in community accommodations and 989 places in decentralized apartments. Two community accommodations have already been closed, and apartments have been terminated and returned to landlords.
The district administration of Ilm states that a permanent halt to the influx seems rather unlikely given recent developments in the main countries and regions of origin. The Ilm district also reports a decline in newly arriving refugees but faces accommodation problems due to the tight housing market.
Many municipalities in Thuringia find it challenging to make long-term predictions about the trends in the number of refugees arriving. In Sonneberg, a community accommodation for refugees has a capacity of 204 persons and is currently occupied by 160 refugees, corresponding to an occupancy rate of 78 percent. No closures of accommodations are planned in the district of Sonneberg.
In conclusion, while some districts in Thuringia are experiencing a relaxation in the occupancy of refugee accommodations, others are still grappling with the challenges posed by the influx of refugees and the tight housing market. The state government will need to continue to monitor the situation and make necessary adjustments to ensure the needs of refugees are met.
