Ethio Telecom and STC Collaborate to Drive Digital Transformation in the Region

In August 2023, Ethio Telecom and Saudi Telecom Company (STC) held a significant meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The purpose of the meeting was to explore new growth opportunities across wholesale connectivity, digital infrastructure, and fintech solutions.

Frehiwot Tamru, CEO of Ethio Telecom, chaired the meeting. The STC delegation was led by Engr. Ziad Hamad A. AlHasson, Vice President of Sales Carrier & Wholesale, and Mr. Bander A. Alkhodair, Carrier Sales Director.

The discussions were part of an ongoing effort to expand business collaboration and accelerate digital transformation between the two companies. The partnership between Ethio Telecom and STC is considered strategic, as both operators aim to scale wholesale and carrier partnerships while unlocking new opportunities in fintech, remittances, and diversified digital solutions.

The integration of Ethio Telecom’s telebirr platform with STC Pay is a key focus in the discussions. This move is aimed at strengthening cross-border remittance and payment ecosystems, and enhancing digital financial inclusion. The collaboration reflects a shared goal of driving innovation and digital transformation in the region.

STC executives have commended Ethio Telecom's role in advancing Ethiopia's digital economy, particularly in the areas of wholesale and carrier partnerships. They have also recognised Ethio Telecom's strong execution track record over the past six years, particularly in delivering transformative projects that have advanced Ethiopia's digital economy.

Following the meeting, Frehiwot Tamru emphasized that there are numerous areas for collaboration to advance mutual growth, digital transformation, and the development of a more inclusive digital economy. The integration of telebirr and STC Pay was reported in early September 2023, marking a significant step forward in this collaboration.

By leveraging combined expertise and resources, Ethio Telecom and STC are committed to driving innovation, expanding digital access, and fostering sustainable economic growth in the region. This partnership is expected to contribute significantly to the digital transformation of both Ethiopia and the wider region.
