Defence Committee and Foreign Affairs Committee meetings denied by Luise Amtsberg's appeal

In the past two weeks, the future of Ukraine and Europe has been hanging in the balance, as Russia continues to bombard Ukraine with unabated ferocity. Amidst this tense situation, the German Bundestag finds itself at the forefront of discussions, seeking to address the crucial issues at hand.

The Chairwoman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Luise Amtsberg, has been leading the charge, advocating for an informed discussion on pressing matters related to Ukraine and Europe. She emphasises the necessity of addressing the frozen assets and the threat posed by the Russian shadow fleet, which are significant factors in the ongoing crisis.

In light of these pressing issues, the committee has made a request for an extraordinary session. However, this request, along with another for an extraordinary session of the Defense Committee, has been rejected. This decision has raised concerns, as the committee is crucial for the future of Ukraine and Europe, given that many questions remain that are central to their security.

The rejection of these requests comes at a time when pressure on Russian President Putin needs to be continued, especially in light of concurrent budget negotiations. The committee provides a protected framework for such discussions, and delaying them until after the parliamentary summer recess is not deemed appropriate for the gravity of the decisions at hand.

The parliament should not be hindered in addressing these critical issues. A sustainable ceasefire is needed as the unconditional basis for peace negotiations with Putin, and the German Bundestag requires an informed discussion to make decisions on this pressing matter.

Simple updates from the federal government are insufficient for obtaining confidential information, and the parliament needs to be able to delve deeper into the complexities of the situation. The threat posed by the Russian shadow fleet and the frozen assets are not issues that can be overlooked, and their resolution is vital for the security of Europe and Germany.

As the situation in Ukraine continues to unfold, the German Bundestag remains committed to finding a peaceful resolution and ensuring the security of its allies. The pressure on Putin needs to be continued, and the parliament will continue to seek answers and push for action in the best interests of all involved.
