Delay in the handover of the Oceania road cycling championship title will extend until 2026 as efforts to find a suitable location and date fall short
Oceania Road Championships Cancelled for 2025, to Return in 2026
The Oceania Cycling Confederation (OCC) has announced that the 2025 Oceania Road Championships will not be held, marking a significant loss for the region's cycling community. The Championships, which usually take place in January and early February, offer UCI points and global recognition to the winners.
The Oceania Road Championships are a prestigious event, attracting some of the strongest cycling nations in the region, including Australia and New Zealand. These nations have traditionally dominated the competition, with their title battles often drawing WorldTour riders into the fray.
In previous years, the Championships have been held in April in Queensland, Australia. However, the 2025 event was cancelled due to unspecified reasons. As a result, the 2024 winners, Ryan Cavanagh (men's elite road race) and Katelyn Nicholson (women's elite road race), will keep their titles for two seasons.
The OCC has confirmed this decision and has been working with member federations and potential hosts to find a date and location for the 2025 Championships. Despite these efforts, they were unable to secure a suitable slot on the calendar.
While the 2025 Championships have been cancelled, the OCC has confirmed that the Oceania Championships have still taken place in other disciplines, with 2025 continental titles already awarded in track, BMX, and mountain biking.
The early season time slots of the Oceania Road Championships fit in with the southern hemisphere summer racing and the European off-season. The UCI-ranked road races in the region, and the points and prestige that go with them, are largely only found in this January and early February block in Australia.
Looking ahead, the OCC President, Tony Mitchell, has stated that the OCC is committed to hosting the Championships in 2026. The 2026 Oceania Road Championships will be hosted by Australia, with further details to be announced in due course.
In conclusion, the cancellation of the 2025 Oceania Road Championships is a blow to the region's cycling community. However, the OCC's commitment to hosting the Championships in 2026 offers a glimmer of hope for the future of cycling in Oceania.
