Delve into the past and present of minerals through the institute's upcoming 'Earthly Matters' exhibit, launching on October 8th.

The Science History Institute in Old City Philadelphia is gearing up for an exciting season, with a series of new initiatives that promise to captivate and educate its visitors.

Firstly, the Institute is presenting a new permanent exhibition titled "Earthly Matters". This exhibition, presented by Alafi Capital and Bering Capital in loving memory of Margaret & Moshe Alafi, showcases more than 20 recently donated minerals. The featured image for "Earthly Matters" is an Afghanite specimen shown under ultraviolet light, offering a unique and mesmerising visual experience.

The exhibition includes elements, crystals, gemstones, and a meteorite, displayed in seven state-of-the-art cases. For those who are eager to learn more about this fascinating display, guests will get a behind-the-scenes look at "Earthly Matters" with curator Michelle DiMeo and exhibition developer Jesse Smith.

In addition to the new exhibition, the Science History Institute has launched a new season of the 'Distillations' podcast. This season focuses on the history of genetic engineering and the birth of the biotech industry, providing insightful discussions on these groundbreaking topics. The podcast episodes will start airing from August 5.

The Institute has also welcomed the 2025-2026 Beckman Center Fellows, scholars from around the world studying a wide range of topics. These scholars will be contributing to the Institute's ongoing research and discussions.

For those who prefer a more interactive experience, mark your calendars for the 2025 Curious Histories Fest. This science-themed event will celebrate school lunch history with pickle tastings, cooking demos, ice cream, and more. It's a fun-filled day where visitors can explore the science of food and learn about the history of school lunches.

Lastly, the public is invited to attend "A Marvelous Night of Minerals: An Earthly Matters Opening Celebration" on October 8, 2025, from 5pm to 8pm. Remarks begin at 6:15pm and the ribbon cutting will take place at 6:45pm. The event takes place at the Science History Institute's headquarters in Old City Philadelphia.

Remember, registration is required to attend the events. The renovation project, which is the first major redesign of the Institute's main building since 2008, also includes the opening of a new gift shop where guests can purchase Institute-branded merchandise and other items.

We look forward to welcoming you to these exciting events at the Science History Institute!
