Demonstrators at Munich's IAA protest site deliberate over the ideal location - with rising worry focusing on Luitpoldpark.
The picturesque Luitpoldpark in Munich's Schwabing-West district is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. However, recent developments have raised concerns about its future condition, as various events, including a protest camp, have been piling up.
Opponents of the International Automobile Exhibition (IAA), which returns to Munich from September 9 to September 14, have set up a protest camp in the Luitpoldpark. The organization behind this camp is "The Local Motors" (Die Lokalisten).
The camp's location has been a topic of discussion in the district council, with a majority of its members expressing concerns about its impact on the park. The CSU faction speaker, Richard Waldburg Hallo, finds the area "too large" and "too sensitive," despite advocating for opponents of the IAA to be given space.
The camp's organizers have coordinated with the KVR and the Building Authority to ensure necessary measures are in place. These measures include the use of ground plates to protect the grass and maintaining a minimum distance from the trees. Spokesperson Vanessa Probst assures that these coordinations have been made to minimise any potential damage to the park.
Despite the concerns, a subsidy for the ground plates in the Luitpoldpark has been provided by the Building Authority. The police were present at the camp during the 2023 IAA, and there were no major problems reported.
The camp's impact on the park's condition has been a subject of debate. After the 2023 protest camp, the grass in the Luitpoldpark was a bit yellow, but it has since recovered. The Georgenschwaige bath, a nearby attraction, has contributed to more activities in the park, according to reports.
Moritz Kienast, the Green representative, is concerned about the impact of events on the Luitpoldpark. However, he does not express anything specifically against the camp. The tree protection officer also has concerns about the camp's impact on the park's trees.
As the IAA approaches, the future of the Luitpoldpark remains a topic of discussion. With events piling up and concerns about its condition, it is a delicate balance between allowing peaceful protests and preserving the park's beauty for future generations.
