Protesters Block Dhaka-Khulna and Faridpur-Bhanga Highways in Algi Union

Protesters in Algi union, located in an unspecified area, blocked the Dhaka-Khulna and Faridpur-Bhanga highways today (5 September). The blockade, which started around 8:00am, was initiated in response to the Election Commission's decision to transfer two unions from Bhanga to Nagarkanda.

The demonstrators, who are local residents, are protesting for better road conditions and infrastructure development. They view the 12 unions and one municipality of Bhanga Upazila as a unified entity and refuse the Election Commission's decision.

The blockade was created using logs and burned tires at the Hamirdi Bus Stand and Suyadi Bus Stand. Vehicles, including ambulances, are stranded due to the traffic jam, causing a several-kilometer-long traffic jam on both highways.

The Officer-in-Charge of the Faridpur Bhanga Highway Police, Md Rokibuzzaman, confirmed the blockade. However, he did not provide any information about the impact of the blockade on regular commuters or businesses. Similarly, the response from the authorities regarding the blockade is not provided.

The Officer-in-Charge attributed the blockade to the Election Commission's decision. The exact number of protesters participating in the blockade is not mentioned. The protesters have threatened to maintain the blockade until the Election Commission's decision is revoked.

Despite repeated attempts, the location of Nagarkanda Upazila is still not specified. The impact of the blockade on regular commuters and businesses is not detailed. The Officer-in-Charge did not provide any response from the authorities regarding the blockade.
