Denmark's cycling team has made an unexpected move, deciding not to participate in the Rwanda World Championships this year. Instead, they will be focusing their efforts on the European Championships in France.

The Danmarks Cycle Union, the nation's cycling federation, has announced that they will field a team for the elite men's and women's road races at the European Championships, which will take place from October 1 to 5. The competition will kick off with the individual time trials.

The decision not to attend the Rwanda World Championships was not an easy one, according to Denmark's national federation. The high costs associated with the event, coupled with the fact that the World Championships and the European Championships this year are in direct continuation of each other in terms of calendar, but on two different continents, seems to have played a significant role.

Several high-profile riders have also declined participation in the World Championships, with Denmark joining the Netherlands and Germany in withdrawing from the elite time trial competitions. One such rider is current men's national time trial champion Mads Pedersen, who is expected to focus on the European Championships time trial title.

Men's national coach Michael Mørkøv expressed his disappointment at not being able to compete in two World Championship disciplines. However, Cecilie Uttrup-Ludwig, a recent podium placer in the elite women's category, will represent Denmark at the European Championships.

The Danish team will not send junior or under 23 riders to the Rwanda Road World Championships. Instead, they will compete at the European Championships with a full team across various categories. Notably, Jonas Vingegaard, a rider who finds the Rwanda World Championships course suitable for him, will not be competing in the World Championships this year.

Despite not participating in the Rwanda World Championships, the Danish team's decision is not a precedent for future years. The Road World Championships are set to be held in Montreal, Canada, in future years.

Elite manager Morten Bennekou stated that the World Championships' location on another continent is a factor in their decision. However, the Danish team remains committed to competing at the highest level, as shown by their focus on the European Championships.

This shift in focus from the World Championships to the European Championships is likely to have a significant impact on the cycling landscape this year. As the competitions approach, the anticipation grows for the exciting races and performances that await.
