Denmark Stage 5 Race Conclusion: Mads Pedersen Secures Third Victory and Overall Title

In the heart of Silkeborg, Mads Pedersen of Lidl-Trek clinched a hard-fought victory in Stage 5 of the Tour of Denmark.

The stage began with an eight-man breakaway, consisting of Jakob Fuglsang, Mads Andersen, Filippo Ridolfo, Conrad Haugsted, Anders Vos Sørensen, Mads Landbo, Marius Innhaug Dahl, Daniel Weis Nielsen, Lukáš Kubiš (Unibet Tietema Rockets), Matyáš Kopecky (Novo Nordisk), and Niklas Larsen (BHS-PL Beton Bornholm).

Lidl-Trek, the dominant force in this year's race, continued to assert their authority, creating big splits in the field and smashing things multiple times. Jakob Söderqvist and Søren Kragh Andersen of Lidl-Trek were part of the late break on Stage 5.

As the race entered the circuit laps of the finish in the centre of Jutland, the breakaway began to crumble. Haugsted dropped back due to his pursuit of King of the Mountains points, and the group was whittled down to seven riders: Lukáš Kubiš, Matyáš Kopecky, Niklas Larsen, Pedersen, Söderqvist, Kragh Andersen, and Axel Zingle (Visma-Lease a Bike).

With the peloton gradually ramping up in pace, one minute behind the breakaway, Pedersen and Zingle made their move. Kragh Andersen, leading the race up the final rep of the climb, gave Pedersen a final lead-out.

In the thrilling sprint to the finish, Pedersen crossed the line first, securing a well-deserved victory. Zingle managed to escape getting boxed in by the Lidl-Trek riders and found a lane to sprint against the race leader, but it was not enough to overtake Pedersen.

With this win, Pedersen extended his lead in the general classification, further solidifying his position as the race favourite. The final stage of the 2022 Tour of Denmark promises to be an exciting conclusion to a dominant performance by Lidl-Trek.
