Denver Broncos Preseason Review: Sam Ehlinger Shines as Quarterback Competition Heats Up

In the final preseason game against New Orleans, third-string quarterback Sam Ehlinger put together a strong case for the Denver Broncos to keep three quarterbacks on their active roster. Ehlinger, a free agent signing in the spring, completed 22 of 31 passes for 198 yards, with a touchdown, an interception, and six rushes for 25 yards.

Ehlinger's impressive performance comes after a rough start in Indianapolis, but he felt supported by the Broncos coaching staff. Quarterbacks coach Davis Webb, who has been following Ehlinger's career since his high school days, believes that with the right coaching, Ehlinger's best is yet to come. Webb felt that Ehlinger's leadership qualities and tough running style were evident at the University of Texas.

The NFL rules allow teams to keep three quarterbacks, with an "emergency third" quarterback not counting against the limit of 46 active players. However, keeping three quarterbacks may subject a player at a different position to the waiver wire, as the Broncos have one of the deepest rosters in football.

Blake Watson left the game with a left leg injury in the fourth quarter, leaving Ehlinger and Jarrett Stidham, currently listed third on the depth chart, as the remaining quarterbacks. The quarterback competition between Ehlinger and Stidham is heating up, and Ehlinger expressed hope for remaining on the 53-man roster going forward.

Meanwhile, on the defensive side of the ball, several players had notable performances. Defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike had a productive preseason with a sack and 4 tackles, while Jordan Jackson is waiting to see if he makes the roster, despite being on it last year. Safeties Sam Franklin, JL Skinner, and Devon Key, along with veteran inside linebacker Garrett Wallow, were on Denver's top special teams units.

Running back Audric Estime also had a productive preseason game with 8 carries, 45 yards, and 1 touchdown, while Tyler Badie added 4 carries, 14 yards, and 4 catches, and 31 yards.

Although no guarantee all four safeties and Wallow make the final 53-man roster, their performance was notable. Ehlinger praised Webb for his belief in Ehlinger's potential, and the coaching staff and front office have liked Ehlinger this spring and thought he had a real chance to develop.

As the regular season approaches, the Broncos will have some tough decisions to make regarding their roster. With Ehlinger's strong performance and the potential for a three-quarterback system, it will be interesting to see how the team shapes up in the coming weeks.
