Department Insists on Evidence: Schools to Show They Avoid Race-Based Admission Practices

In a move aimed at reforming higher learning institutions, the Trump Administration has announced a new initiative to ensure that meritocracy and excellence once again characterize American higher education.

The announcement comes in response to the 2023 Supreme Court ruling on the Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) case against Harvard, which resulted in a rejection of the use of race as a factor in college admissions. The move has led many universities to abandon diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, leading the new initiative, stated that the goal is to provide full transparency into college admissions practices and prevent discrimination against hard-working American applicants. She directed the National Center for Education Statistics to collect admissions data from institutions of higher education.

The data to be reported will include quantitative measures of applicants' and admitted students' academic achievements such as standardized test scores, GPAs, and other applicant characteristics. The new initiative also requires institutions to report data disaggregated by race and sex relating to their applicant pool, admitted cohort, and enrolled cohort at the undergraduate level and for specific graduate and professional programs.

The Department of Education has released a memo detailing a new auditing process for college admissions. The memo, released on Thursday, stated that the department will demand schools to prove that they are not conducting race-based admissions.

Meanwhile, the Department of Justice is investigating the University of California over alleged DEI-based hiring, and George Mason University's hiring practices are also under investigation over alleged discrimination. Shabbos Kestenbaum, a Harvard alumnus, discussed the college being referred to the DOJ for an antisemitism violation.

Donald Trump, who is often discussed in the context of structurally reforming higher learning institutions, has been active in cracking down on DEI initiatives. The new initiative is a continuation of his efforts to ensure fairness and meritocracy in American higher education.

No search results specify which educational institutions under the Trump administration initiative are required to submit their admission data directly to the Federal Ministry of Education. The new initiative is expected to provide a clearer picture of the admissions process in American universities and ensure that meritocracy once again takes centre stage.
