Derisive remarks and whistles directed towards Hanning
In a forgettable debut for the new coach, Nicolej Krickau, the Berlin handballers experienced a disappointing start to their Bundesliga campaign with a 32:39 loss against SC Magdeburg.
The match, marked by a series of missed shots and passes, saw the Berliners struggle to match the high level of play displayed by their opponents. At one point during the second half, the deficit reached a significant 12 goals, a poor performance that reflected poorly on the team.
The turmoil in the team's leadership, following the double dismissal of Kretzschmar and coach Jaron Siewert, seemed to have affected the team's performance. Sports director Stefan Kretzschmar had earlier called on the Berlin fans to stand united behind the team before the game. However, the fans' support waned as the match progressed, with boos ringing out from the stands.
Despite the star player Mathias Gidsel's efforts, he was weak in the finish, often ending up on the ground after intense two-on-one battles. In contrast, SCM's goalkeeper, Sergey Hernández, had an impressive performance with nine saves at half-time.
The hosts' performance did not resemble that of a top team, while Magdeburg maintained a strong tempo and effectively exploited the weak defensive behavior of the Berliners. SCM fans celebrated as "league leaders", reflecting their team's dominance in the match.
Club boss Bob Hanning, heavily booed by the fans, responded to the anger, stating that if you bear the responsibility, you have to stand by it. The fans' chants of "Jaron Siewert" during the game served as a reminder of the former coach, with some SCM fans mocking Hanning, stating "Without Jaron, there would be nothing going on here."
The loss was significant, not just for the scoreline, but also for the team's poor showing, resembling a relegated team in some phases. The Berlin handball team will look to regroup and improve ahead of their next match.
