Desert spectacle features colossal aquatic creature in AlUla

In the heart of Saudi Arabia, the ancient city of AlUla is home to a stunning collection of unique rock formations that have captured the imagination of visitors and locals alike.

Located not far from AlUla city center, the Rainbow rock resembles a rainbow flanked by two clouds, offering a breathtaking sight against the desert backdrop.

The Face rock, on the other hand, can be found among the monumental tombs of Hegra, an ancient city in the northwestern AlUla Valley. Its distinct shape has given it a striking resemblance to a human face, adding a touch of mystery to the ancient city.

The unique rock formations discovered in recent years include the Elephant Rock (Jabal AlFil) and the Arch Rock. The Elephant rock, one of the unique rock formations in AlUla, is particularly noteworthy for its shape that resembles an elephant's head and trunk.

The deserts of AlUla are also home to a number of mushroom-shaped rocks. The most famous of these can be found in the Sharaan Nature Reserve. The Mushroom rocks, as they are called, rise from the sandy floor like a forest of giant mushrooms, creating a surreal and otherworldly landscape.

Another unique formation, the Dancing rocks, can be found in the Raggasat Valley. These rocks appear to be swaying together, adding a lively and dynamic element to the otherwise still desert landscape.

Initially, social media users speculated that the Fish rock was a fossilized giant fish. However, archeologists believe its unique shape is the result of erosion from ancient river systems that swept sand to the edges of the supercontinent Gondwana, about 500 million years ago. The Fish rock, stretching nearly 200 meters in length, is located in the AlUla governorate's Wadi Al-Fann.

The Royal Commission for AlUla is working tirelessly to preserve these unique geological and cultural treasures of AlUla. Wadi Al-Fann, a 65 sq. km centerpiece of the "Journey Through Time Masterplan" initiative, is a key focus area for these conservation efforts.

The transformation of AlUla into a leading global destination for arts, heritage, culture, and nature is a significant part of the Royal Commission for AlUla's vision. Wadi Al-Fann, with its unique rock formations and rich history, plays a crucial role in achieving this goal.

Whether you're a nature lover, an archaeology enthusiast, or simply seeking a unique travel experience, AlUla offers a wealth of natural wonders waiting to be explored.
