Despite a decrease, Vingegaard clinches victory in the second stage of the Vuelta
Vingegaard Takes Over as Overall Leader in the Vuelta
The second stage of the 80th Vuelta a España, which began in Italy, saw an exciting turn of events with Jonas Vingegaard claiming the red jersey as the overall leader.
The Danish rider, who is the favorite for the overall victory, took over the lead from Jasper Philipsen after a thrilling final climb to Limone Piemonte. Despite being involved in a crash during the stage, Vingegaard managed to win the climb and only sustained some scrapes on his left arm.
Unfortunately, German young star Florian Lipowitz and double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel are not competing in the Vuelta, while Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic are also absent. Vingegaard leads the Visma | Lease a Bike team in this year's race.
The second stage was a challenging one, with the final climb being a 9.9-kilometer ascent with an average gradient of 5.2 percent. Giulio Ciccone and David Gaudu finished in second and third places, respectively, in the stage.
The third stage of the Vuelta will be 134.6 kilometers long and will take place on Italian soil. The terrain may make it difficult for sprinters to stay with the main field, which could potentially shake up the overall standings.
The Vuelta, with many mountain ascents, will end in Madrid on September 14. The riders will face numerous challenges in the coming stages, but Vingegaard's strong performance so far has made him the clear favorite to take the overall victory.
