Despite Campus Closure due to Storm, Valentine's Day Celebrations Continue Unabated

At Holy Cross, the spirit of Valentine's Day is deeply rooted in history, with connections to Massachusetts and Worcester, where the first fancy valentines were produced in 1848. This year, the campus continued to celebrate love in various ways, despite the challenges posed by a sudden campus closure.

On February 6th, Professor Susan Elizabeth Sweeney hosted a Literary Social and Valentine Workshop in the Levis Browsing Room of the Dinand Library. An enthusiastic group of 16 students attended, enjoying opportunities to make valentines, read love poems, and enjoy refreshments. The event was organised by a reference librarian, whose name, unfortunately, is not publicly available.

The Student Government Association (SGA) also marked the week with their Sexual Respect week, held from February 12th to the 16th. Events included a love letters to survivors RPE table and a Love Social.

Amidst the festivities, the campus closure on Tuesday, February 13th, suspended classes and several activities. However, undeterred, HerCampus planned to sell candygrams in Hogan, but the sales were held online instead. The Roses and Candy Gram Sale, like many other events, adapted to the new circumstances.

One of the unsung heroes of Holy Cross is Cathi Gallant, who has worked at the institution for 20 years. Known to many as Kimball Cathi, she works in Dining Services. Her dedication to the college earned her a "Crusader of the Week" feature. A photo of Cathi, brightly smiling, is included in the article.

The residents of Townhouse 1F have decorated their living space for the season, with lights, tassels, and candy canes adorning the main living room area, as showcased in a photo. Despite the Christmas decorations, the Valentine's spirit was palpable.

The Holy Cross Libraries and the Montserrat: Contemporary Challenges Cluster collaborated to host an Anti-Valentine Open Mic Night on the 14th, in the Levis Room in Dinand Library. Professor Jorge Santos was the host.

Lastly, Holy Cross recently hosted an HIV/AIDS research symposium from November 29th to December 2nd. The event provided a platform for researchers to share their findings and discuss the ongoing fight against the disease.

As the campus moves forward, the spirit of love, community, and resilience remains strong at Holy Cross.
