Developers of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles clarify that the upcoming strategy RPG falls neither strictly into the category of remake nor remaster, causing confusion.
In an exciting development for fans of strategic role-playing games (SRPGs), the developers have announced a new addition to the Final Fantasy Tactics series. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, set to be released in 2025, is not a remake or remaster of the 1997 PS1 classic, but a brand-new game in the series.
The core developers of the original Final Fantasy Tactics, including Kazutoyo Maehiro (director), Yasumi Matsuno (director and writer), and Hiroshi Minagawa (artist and designer), are returning to work on this new project. They have emphasised that The Ivalice Chronicles is not a remake or remaster, but a new game based on the original.
The announcement was made in an interview with 4Gamer, translated by Automaton. The developers explained that a remake would involve remaking everything from scratch, which The Ivalice Chronicles does not fit. Instead, they aim to differentiate The Ivalice Chronicles from traditional remakes and remasters.
The Ivalice Chronicles is rooted in the original 1997 Final Fantasy Tactics game. The developers have ensured that many of the original crew members are involved in the 2025 version, including director Kazutoyo Maehiro, artist and designer Hiroshi Minagawa, writer and director Yasumi Matsuno, and others.
To set it apart from its predecessors, The Ivalice Chronicles will feature new difficulty modes, voice acting, updated UI, and script tweaks in the 'Enhanced' mode. The developers argue that these additions do not accurately describe the game as a remaster.
The interview with 4Gamer did not refer to the game as 'Final Fantasy Tactics Remastered'. Instead, the developers of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles have announced a new SRPG for 2025, promising an exciting return to the world of Ivalice for fans of the series.
