Development Minster Endorses Ethical Chocolate Purchase, Mentioning Nicholas

In recent news, Development Minister Gerd Müller has urged consumers to be mindful of production conditions when purchasing chocolate Advent calendars. This call to action stems from the ethical concerns associated with child labour in West African cocoa production.

Regrettably, child labour in West African cocoa plantations has not decreased in the last ten years. Shockingly, approximately 1.5 million boys and girls are still working on these plantations. This issue continues to be a significant concern in West African cocoa production.

Minister Müller believes that everyone can make a positive impact by choosing a fairly produced Advent calendar. By doing so, consumers can help prevent children from having to work in West African cocoa plantations and directly improve the incomes of families in the region.

However, there is a lack of fairly produced Advent calendars available in supermarkets. Fortunately, there are brands that prioritize sustainability, fair trade, and social responsibility. BecksCocoa, for instance, sources its cocoa directly, fair trade, and organically from Africa, South America, and the Dominican Republic. Organic and fair trade chocolate producers like Zotter and Moo Free also produce vegan and fair trade chocolate Advent calendars.

Consumers are advised to look for corresponding labels when shopping for Advent calendars to ensure they are making a conscious and ethical choice. By purchasing a fairly produced Advent calendar, they can feel good knowing they are contributing to a better future for West African communities.

It's important to note that about 70 percent of the cocoa processed in Germany is sourced from West Africa. This underscores the significant role consumers play in addressing the issue of child labour in the region.

In conclusion, the call to action is clear: by choosing fairly produced Advent calendars, consumers can make a difference in the lives of West African children and families. Let's all do our part to end child labour in West African cocoa production.
