Diet of Gorillas: Explanation of Their Muscular Herbivore Nature
In the vast jungles of Africa, two of our closest relatives, gorillas and chimpanzees, exhibit distinct dietary habits that shape their interactions with their ecosystems.
Gorillas, with their massive physique, have evolved to utilise short bursts of brute strength. Unlike humans, who have slim muscle fibres for long-distance walking and manual labour, gorillas' muscle mass is adapted for power. This adaptation is evident in their lean muscle mass, which accounts for about a third of their body weight, making them significantly stronger than a typical adult human, with up to double the muscle mass.
Their diet primarily consists of plant-based foods, with a focus on leafy greens and fruit. In the Virunga Volcanoes, they primarily feed on bamboo, herbs, shrubs, and tree leaves. In contrast, the Central African forests offer a variety of fruits, leaves, stems, and even occasional insects for the gorillas to consume.
Interestingly, research suggests that gorillas get less energy from starchy vegetables due to adaptations to denser plant sources. Their digestive system is designed to break down fibrous vegetation, allowing them to extract necessary nutrients.
On the other hand, chimpanzees have a more varied diet that includes insects, small animals, and occasional meat. This dietary difference is reflected in their foraging habits. Gorillas tend to forage for food at lower levels of the forest, while chimpanzees forage at different levels and sometimes compete for fruit.
The diversity in their diets has significant implications for their ecosystems. For instance, gorillas' focus on plant-based foods may have a different impact on the vegetation compared to chimpanzees' more varied diet.
