Hallervorden, named Dieter, engages in dialogues pertaining to 'Sales Shows' - Dieter Hallervorden labels discussions as "peddling spectacles"

In an interview, 89-year-old actor Dieter Hallervorden expressed his dissatisfaction with current German talk shows. Hallervorden, known for his roles in comedies like "Die Wochenschau" and "Löwenzahn," reminisced about the heated debates that once dominated these programmes.

Hallervorden recalled the intense discussions between figures like Herbert Wehner (SPD) and Franz Josef Strauß, which he believes are sorely missed in today's talk shows. These debates, he said, were characterised by genuine verbal sparring that fostered deeper understanding and debate.

The actor criticised the current state of talk shows, stating that they are primarily used as platforms to promote new books, films, or political agendas. According to Hallervorden, these shows have transformed into sales pitches, losing the essence of open and intellectual discourse.

Looking back, Hallervorden also recalls former chancellors Willy Brandt and Helmut Kohl in the context of these debates. In recent years, hosts of talk shows featuring verbal disputes similar to those between Herbert Wehner and Franz Josef Strauß have included well-known personalities from German television such as Günther Jauch, Maybrit Illner, and Anne Will.

Despite his criticism, Hallervorden finds modern talk shows unbearable. He misses the days when these programmes were more than just sales pitches, and instead provided a platform for meaningful and engaging discussions.
