Digital Advancement and Personal Perks of e-ID in Switzerland

In the digital age, the topic of secure authentication has become a hot discussion, with Passkeys being touted as the future solution. However, there is debate over whether they are just a hype or a viable option. Meanwhile, a more certain development is on the horizon for Switzerland: the introduction of a state-recognized e-ID, set to be decided on September 28, 2025.

The e-ID is a digital identity solution that is expected to drive the digitalization of the economy, making processes more efficient and cost-effective. Ergon Informatik, a Zurich-based software company, is a strong supporter of the e-ID, believing it offers numerous advantages such as easy handling, high data protection standards, economic added value, and increased security in the digital space.

The e-ID offers opportunities for login procedures and other situations where identity verification is crucial. It simplifies administrative procedures and facilitates many processes in daily life. For instance, the added value of the e-ID is evident in simplifying tasks like opening a bank account or concluding an insurance contract.

Since 2024, Ergon Informatik has conducted ideation workshops with various interested companies to explore the potential of digital identities within specific business processes. Their findings highlight clear benefits such as streamlined processes, enhanced security in login and identity verification scenarios, and enabling users to control their data disclosure while actively preventing identity misuse. The workshops emphasize that digital IDs offer undeniable added value, fostering a win-win situation for all parties involved and strengthening digital sovereignty through state-managed identity infrastructures.

However, in the age of artificial intelligence and automation, DDoS attacks are a concern. Yet, the e-ID, with the federal government responsible for issuing and operating the infrastructure, is considered secure and reliable by Ergon.

Recently, new guidelines for digital identity have been published by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology), which could further bolster the security of digital identities like the e-ID. Ergon is optimistic about the widespread adoption of digital IDs worldwide in the long run.

As the digital world continues to evolve, the e-ID presents an exciting opportunity for Switzerland to streamline processes, enhance security, and take a significant step towards digital sovereignty.
