In January 2026, the city of Heusenstamm, Hessen, will be at the forefront of a groundbreaking pilot project aimed at revolutionising urban traffic management. The project, dubbed "Green Wave via App", is being spearheaded by Hessen Mobil, and will see the implementation of a new traffic management system at three key intersections: Heusenstammer Straße/Im Birkengrund, Ringstraße/Hohebergstraße, and Isenburger Straße/Berliner Straße.

The heart of this innovative system is an app called trafficpilot. This app will facilitate automatic registration at traffic lights, promising fewer stops, shorter red phases, and a more relaxed driving experience. The potential benefits extend beyond motorists, with applications for speeding up public transportation and prioritised approaches for emergency services also on the table.

However, the success of the project hinges on ensuring that preferential treatment of individual road users does not negatively impact overall traffic flow. The system under test could potentially be extended to benefit other road users, including cyclists, as evidenced by the separate pilot project for cycling in Heusenstamm.

Offenbach am Main is set to join Heusenstamm in the pilot project testing of the new method to accelerate cycling with the trafficpilot app system at the intersection of Isenburger Straße/Berliner Straße from January 2026.

The technology behind the Green Wave via App has generated significant interest, with a recent press event in Heusenstamm attracting a crowd eager to learn more about the potential benefits. The long-term success of the project in everyday life remains uncertain, but the goal is clear: to reduce waiting times and make cycling more comfortable.

The priority request feature in the app allows traffic lights to give cyclists an earlier or longer green light if traffic conditions allow. This virtual registration in the app does what the button on the pole usually does, but earlier and automatically.

Acceptance of waiting times is expected to increase, and the number of red-light violations is expected to decrease as a result of the Green Wave via App. The positive potential benefits of the technology were highlighted at the press event, with the project serving as a showcase for Hesse as a land of expanses, implying potential expansion to other areas.

The success of the Green Wave via App in Heusenstamm and Offenbach am Main could pave the way for a more efficient, comfortable, and safer urban traffic experience across Hesse and beyond.
