Unveiling the reasons why David Maillu remains a hidden asset that Machakos leaders seemingly choose to overlook.

Discernment of David Maillu's value as a gold mine seemingly eludes Machakos leaders.

Nestled in the heart of Machakos County lies Mathemboni, the homestead of one of Africa's most prolific writers, David Maillu. This enchanting abode, adorned with art, books, and artifacts that capture his imagination, serves as a testament to a literary career spanning over five decades.

Maillu, known for his monumental novel, The Broken Drum, reputed to be the longest novel ever published in Africa, has produced a vast body of work that traverses various genres, including popular stories, philosophy, political commentary, and children's literature. Works such as My Dear Bottle, After 4.30, The Flesh, The Ayah, Rebecca, Mbaatha, and Thorns of Life have resonated deeply with readers, particularly the younger generation.

Ukambani, the region where Maillu was born, is a land of mystery, history, and resilience, and has inspired the author to set his novel, Shadows of Love, in the region. Unfortunately, beyond the Korokocho nyama choma joint and the statue of Muindi Mbingu, there is little to attract visitors in Machakos town.

However, this untapped potential exists in Machakos County, as it is the birthplace of one of Africa's most prolific writers. The county government could partner with Maillu to host literary festivals, school tours, creative writing workshops, exhibitions of African art, and cultural retreats. By doing so, they could transform Mathemboni into a literary and cultural attraction for Ukambani and Kenya's cultural tourism.

Maillu's genius is celebrated more abroad than at home, despite carrying the name of Kenya across the globe through his books. The county could benefit significantly from capitalizing on Maillu's legacy and promoting cultural tourism in Ukambani.

David Maillu is not just a writer; he is a cultural institution and a living archive of Kenyan imagination. His works, daring and controversial, were often read secretly in school. His contributions to Kenyan literature are immeasurable, and it is high time the county leadership recognizes the value of his legacy and turns it into a beacon of cultural pride.

As of now, there is no publicly available information about organizations or institutions with which Maillu has not collaborated for the implementation of Mathemboni as a tourist and cultural attraction. It is a project that warrants attention and investment, not just for the benefit of Machakos County, but for the entire nation.

Mathemboni, with its potential to become a cultural magnet, attracting scholars, artists, and tourists from around the world, is a gem waiting to be polished. Let us work towards making this dream a reality, and in doing so, honour the legacy of one of Kenya's greatest literary figures.
