Discontinuation of Internet Explorer 11: Implications for Users Explained

Internet Explorer 11 (IE11), the last browser in Microsoft's Internet Explorer line, is set to retire on June 15, 2022. This marks the end of an era for a browser that has been a staple in the tech world for many years.

Microsoft initially planned to retire IE11 in 2025, but the date has been moved forward. After June 15, 2022, IE11 may stop working on certain versions of Windows operating systems.

Impacted service users have been notified by letter, and businesses accessing the Payment Services Website (PSW) using PKI (smartcard solution) may need to set up Microsoft's IE11 compatibility mode after this date.

For PSW users, the compatibility mode for IE11 is the best option. To use the Edge compatibility mode, Windows 10 or 11 is required. A step-by-step guide for setting up the IE11 compatibility mode has been created and can be found on the website: www.wearepay.uk/IE11.

Microsoft will end support for IE11 on June 15, 2022, for most versions of Windows 10. Ongoing feature and security updates officially ceased earlier, and Microsoft now recommends using Microsoft Edge instead with Internet Explorer mode for compatibility.

Dougie Belmore, the Chief Payments Officer of Pay.UK, is responsible for the operation of Direct Debit, Bacs Direct Credit, Faster Payments, and cheques at Pay.UK. He has played a significant role in bringing together the UK's major payment schemes, including Bacs.

New web browsers continue to emerge, and it's time for users to transition from IE11. For any queries or assistance, a dedicated IE11 team is available to help Bacs service users. They can be reached at 0808 1000 423, between 0800 - 1800, Monday to Friday.

As Microsoft retires IE11, it has also released Windows 11. This new operating system is the future, and it's time for users to embrace the change and explore the new possibilities it offers.
