Discourse with Maureen Magarity, Head Coach of WBB (Women's Basketball Team)

The University of New Hampshire's women's basketball team, the Crusaders, are setting their sights high this season, aiming to defend their Patriot League title and secure the coveted 1 seed and home court advantage for the playoffs.

At the helm of the Crusaders is head coach Maureen Magarity, who has proven to be a formidable leader since her appointment in 2020. Magarity's coaching career began at an early age, making her high school's varsity girls' basketball team as a seventh grader. Her passion for the sport was nurtured by her mother, Rita, who served as her first coach.

Magarity's college career and the university she attended remain undisclosed, but her love for basketball continued to grow. She honed her skills playing for the Christ the King AAU team, where she shared the court with WNBA and Olympic legend Sue Bird.

Magarity's college career was marked by injuries, including stress fractures in her feet and a broken foot, but she didn't let that deter her. Her resilience was evident when she was hired as the head coach of Holy Cross women's basketball team in April 2020.

In her first season with the Crusaders, Magarity led the team to a 7-8 record. However, her second season saw a significant improvement, with the team finishing with a 20-9 record and a 14-4 Patriot League record, clinching the regular season divisional title.

Currently, the Crusaders are enjoying a strong home record, standing at 10-1, but have struggled on the road, with a 4-6 record. Despite this, their determination to regain the Patriot League title remains unwavering.

Magarity's coaching philosophy is evident in her team's play. She instils a strong work ethic and a relentless pursuit of excellence, as demonstrated by her players' average of 18 points and 10 rebounds in her senior year, earning her USA Today Honorable Mention All-American honours.

Looking ahead, the Crusaders' next game is this Saturday, February 10th, on the road against American. With Magarity at the helm, the team is poised to give a strong performance, as they continue their quest for the Patriot League title.

In a recent move, Magarity has also brought on board one of her former players at UNH, Kat Fogarty, as an assistant coach. This addition is expected to strengthen the team's bond and further improve their performance.

As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see if the Crusaders can repeat as Patriot League champions under Magarity's guidance. With her unwavering determination and passion for the sport, there's no doubt that the team is in good hands.
