In a surprising turn of events, Philip Mulryne, a former footballer who represented Northern Ireland 27 times, has found a new calling as a monk.

After a successful career that saw him play over 150 games for Norwich City, Mulryne felt a sense of dissatisfaction during his last season at the club. This led him to question his happiness, despite having money, fame, and a decent career.

In 2009, at the age of 31, Mulryne began studying for the priesthood. He first studied philosophy in Belfast and later moved to Rome to study theology. In 2012, he entered the Dominican novitiate in Cork, Ireland.

Mulryne was ordained as a priest in 2017 and now serves as novice master at St Mary's Priory in Cork, where he helps train new Dominican friars. He has lived as a priest at the Dominikanerkloster in Cambridge since 2017 and also resides with many other monks.

Mulryne's journey to religious life was not immediate. Initially, he planned to become a secular priest, but later felt called to religious life with the Dominican Order. His decision to become a monk was influenced by his search for solace and peace, which he found by volunteering at homeless shelters and attending church.

Despite his new life, Mulryne still finds time to watch three-minute football highlights on shared computers. His football career included a brief stint at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, where he made only one Premier League appearance. He also played for Northern Ireland, making 27 appearances for the national team.

However, Mulryne says he's never been happier since becoming a monk. He found a sense of purpose and peace in his new life, which he could not find in his football career. His story serves as a reminder that happiness and fulfillment can be found in unexpected places.
