Discover the Thrills of the Paparoa Great Walk: A Guide to Safety
The Paparoa Track Great Walk, one of New Zealand's most popular attractions, now has a new safety video to guide visitors and ensure their safe return. This useful tool, part of the Mountain Safety Council's (MSC) Tramping Video Series, highlights the varied conditions, packing tips, common risks, and key decision-making points for both hikers and mountain bikers.
Since its opening in 2019, the Paparoa Track has seen a steadily increasing interest from both trampers and mountain bikers. The track, which spans 56.2km for advanced riders or 55km for intermediate Great Walk hikers, is a shared-use track that offers a challenging yet rewarding experience.
The safety video was produced in collaboration with the Department of Conservation (DOC), Ngāti Waewae, and the Mountain Safety Council (MSC). The video was made with support from key partner organizations and Ngāti Waewae, who gifted the introduction.
The video guides visitors through the trail, providing them with the information they need to prepare for the trail's unique conditions. From the track's opening to the Pike River Valley, the video aims to improve the experience on some of the country's popular backcountry tracks.
In addition to the safety video, the MSC's Plan My Walk is available to help those planning to tackle the Paparoa Track. This resource includes the new video, relevant weather and track alerts, a weather forecast, and an interactive gear list. Users can create a trip plan in seconds and share it with a trusted contact using Plan My Walk.
The Pike29 Memorial Track, set to open on 17 February, will provide a connection between the Paparoa Track and the Pike River Valley. This new addition is expected to be very popular and will further enhance the experience for visitors.
The Paparoa Track, open year-round, can be exposed to severe weather with heavy rain, strong winds, snow, and freezing temperatures at any time. Ice and snow are more common in the winter months, adding additional hazards. However, with the new safety video and resources like Plan My Walk, visitors can be better prepared for their adventure.
The safety video for the Paparoa Track is available to watch on YouTube, making it easily accessible for all. Whether you're an experienced adventurer or a first-time visitor, the safety video and resources are essential tools for planning your trip to the Paparoa Track. So, gear up, plan your trip, and embark on an unforgettable adventure in New Zealand's beautiful backcountry.
