Discovered: A short-term answer for portable classrooms at schools

School on Reuterstraße is currently undergoing a significant transformation as it prepares to replace its old containers with new ones. The new containers, expected to be ready for occupation by the end of November, will offer more space and meet current technical requirements, providing a much-needed upgrade.

The discovery of mold in three containers within the ceiling structure of the school during exams has necessitated this change. Fortunately, no direct contact with mold was made by anyone, and the affected containers have been deemed repairable but uneconomical to fix.

As part of the consolidation phase, which is expected to be over by mid to late November, two new containers are already in place. A third new container, the so-called C-container, was equipped for use during the holidays.

Priority is given to the installation of the new containers to minimize disruptions for students and teachers. In the meantime, five rooms in the central part of the school will be used temporarily, and the neighboring music school has offered two rooms for temporary use.

The former room of the school social pedagogue has also been converted into a course room to accommodate the transition. Despite the challenges, School Principal Sven Hees acknowledges that there will be restrictions due to a room occupancy rate of almost 100%.

However, efforts are being made to minimize these restrictions. Department head Alexandra Meuthen assures that all parties are working diligently to ensure that the impact on teaching and learning is kept to a minimum.

The active support of the school administration is crucial in compensating for the new strain caused by the container replacement and mold issue. Principal Hees states that the new strain is being compensated for to a large extent.

The renovation of the central part, originally scheduled after the holidays, has been postponed until the end of November to allow for the completion of the container consolidation. Once consolidation is complete, the renovation will proceed as planned.

Three rooms from the C-container will be available for classes once technical details are clarified. Unfortunately, not every lesson can take place in specialized rooms due to the restrictions. Nevertheless, the school community remains optimistic and is looking forward to the completion of the container replacement project.
