Discovering my preference for the aesthetically pleasing Hota, a standout in gardening apps
The Hota app, a revolutionary gardening tool, has made its mark in the world of horticulture by offering a user-friendly solution for those new to planting and gardening.
Launched last year at the RHS Urban Show in Manchester, UK, the app stands out from its competitors with its bold design that represents flowers and an easy-to-use user interface (UX). The homepage shows tasks that need to be done at a glance, with more detail available by tapping into a bed.
The app was designed with the intention of leading the user, rather than the other way round. Co-founder Hannah Shaw explains that Hota aims to make gardening simple without the need for expensive garden design or extensive research.
One of the standout features of Hota is the Bed Design. This interactive tool generates a plant bed design, suggesting easy-to-maintain plants for the front, middle, and back of the garden bed. Users input the size and themes of their garden bed, and the app does the rest.
The app identifies the direction and soil type of the garden based on location, ensuring that the suggested plants are suitable for the user's specific conditions. This feature is designed to encourage new gardeners to start gardening easily.
The Hota app also provides reminders for watering, weeding, pruning, and deadheading using a traffic light system. Co-founders Hannah Shaw and Toby are particularly proud of the Bed Design feature, which shows exactly where to plant each plant.
The app's design is visually appealing with a colour scheme of coral and orange, and the app icon is designed in the shape of a flower, initially inspired by a tulip.
Hota has formed a partnership with Proctors Nursery, a gold medal winner at the Chelsea Flower Show, allowing users to buy the suggested plants directly from the app. This partnership makes Hota a one-stop-shop for all gardening needs.
The Hota garden planning tool is available throughout Germany and in some other European countries, and can be downloaded from the App Store. With its uncluttered, simple pages and straightforward design, Hota is a must-have for any novice gardener looking to bring some greenery into their life.
