Discrimination at the World Cup: Lithuanian spectators utilizing monkey chants against Dennis Schröder
In an intense and open game, the German basketball team triumphed over Lithuania with a score of 107:88 (55:47), securing their place in the final round of EuroBasket in Riga.
The victory was spearheaded by Franz Wagner, who scored an impressive 24 points, outscoring Jonas Valanciunas, the Lithuanian NBA player. Dennis Schröder, the team's captain, also contributed significantly with 26 points.
Daniel Theis, another key player, showcased his versatility with a strong offensive performance, scoring 23 points while converting all nine of his shots. He also made history by scoring the 100th point for Germany from the free throw line.
Andreas Obst, a sharpshooter for Germany, hit several three-pointers, adding to the team's impressive offensive display. The game reached triple digits in score, highlighting the high offensive level of both teams.
Lithuania fought back and was within reach at halftime, trailing by just eight points. However, Germany's dominance was evident in the second half, as they embarked on a 21:3 run to seal the victory.
The game was a reminder of the 2022 EM encounter in Cologne, where Germany also emerged victorious after two extra periods and plenty of tension.
The win comes amidst allegations of racist heckling towards Dennis Schröder from Lithuanian fans. Ingo Weiss, president of the German Basketball Association, condemned the incident, and the organizers of the EuroBasket, the FIBA, will be complained to about the racist incitement.
Looking ahead, the German team is aiming for a medal in EuroBasket and is set to face Great Britain and Finland in the next round. Former national player Per Günther stated that the game against Lithuania was about something serious, and the team will undoubtedly bring this determination into their upcoming matches.
