Discusses Film-Maker Guy Nattiv on His Directorial Venture, SKIN
In the world of filmmaking, Guy Nattiv has made a name for himself with his compelling and thought-provoking work. With a background in commercial directing for companies like Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Nestle, Skoda, and Mercedes, Nattiv has honed his craft to tell captivating stories that resonate with audiences.
His latest project, "Skin," is no exception. This powerful film tells the true story of Bryon Widner, a former skinhead group member who underwent over a year of painful operations to remove his racist tattoos.
Nattiv's journey with "Skin" began in 2012 when he read about Widner's story in a newspaper in Tel Aviv. Intrigued, he delved deep into research, meeting with Widner himself, speaking with key people from the Southern Poverty Law Center, and watching Bill Brummell's documentary "ERASING HATE."
For the role of Bryon, Nattiv turned to Jamie Bell, who, after meeting with the real Widner, proved to be the perfect fit. Bell underwent a significant physical transformation for the role, gaining 20 pounds and undergoing a three-and-a-half-hour makeup process every day to achieve the character's appearance. His performance is described as visceral, explosive, and nuanced, with a lot of freedom to improvise and bring his own self to the role.
The casting process for "Skin" was a long and meticulous one, with Nattiv working closely with Laura Rosenthal and her team to shape the Skin family. Danielle MacDonald was cast as Julie, and Jamie Bell was brought on board as Bryon after a meeting with Nattiv. Bill, Vera, and Louisa were cast to play members of the Skin family, and Daryle Lamont Jenkins was cast as himself after it was discovered he was a fan of the Luke Cage character.
"Skin" marks Nattiv's first U.S. feature film. Prior to this, he had directed his first feature film, "Strangers," which premiered at the Sundance & Tribeca Film Festivals in 2008. His work has been recognised with numerous awards, including "Best Actor" in the Israeli Academy for his film "Magic Men" and the Audience Award at the MAUI film festival.
With "Skin," Nattiv has once again proven his ability to tell compelling and impactful stories, shedding light on a true story of redemption and the power of change.
