Modi and Putin Strengthen Ties at SCO Summit
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin met for an extended bilateral discussion at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China. The meeting, which lasted over an hour, was described as "excellent" and resulted in a statement from New Delhi.
The leaders warmly hugged each other during the summit, and Modi confirmed Putin's upcoming visit to India for the 23rd summit in December. The formal meeting took place in Tianjin and covered a wide range of topics, including bilateral cooperation, regional and global developments, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Modi and Putin expressed satisfaction with the sustained growth in bilateral ties in various sectors. President Putin referred to the special relations between Russia and India as the foundation for the development of their relations in the future. The leaders discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation in trade, fertilisers, space, security, and culture.
One of the highlights of the meeting was Putin's invitation for Modi to travel with him in the Russian presidential 'Aurus Senat', a heavily-armoured luxury limousine. The conversation continued for about 45 minutes while inside the limousine.
During the discussion on regional and global issues, Modi reiterated his support for recent initiatives taken to address the conflict in Ukraine. He expressed hope for a constructive approach towards establishing peace. The leaders emphasized the need to expedite a cessation of the conflict and find a durable peace settlement.
Modi stated that India's close cooperation with Russia is important for global peace, stability, and prosperity. His conversations with Putin are always insightful, he posted on social media X after the meeting.
However, it's worth noting that India has been slapped with a 50% tariff by the United States for importing Russian oil. This could potentially impact the bilateral energy relations between the two countries.
The formal bilateral meeting between Modi and Putin resulted in a statement from New Delhi, mentioning discussions on regional and global issues, including the latest developments concerning Ukraine. The leaders will continue to work towards strengthening their relationship and contributing to global peace and stability.
