Discussion: Picking a Medical Rotation in the Field of Radiology, as Discussed in a Podcast
In an interview, Moses Flash, a radiology resident and future interventional radiology fellow, shared his insights about the unexpected realities of his chosen field.
A graduate of both Williams College and Harvard Medical School, Flash applied to between 60 and 80 programmes before landing at the University of Pennsylvania. The choice was influenced by factors such as flights, relative safety, and proximity to family on the East Coast.
Flash, who is also interested in interventional oncology, discussed the development of individualized and fine-tuned "search patterns" as a routine approach to imaging studies. He noted that the volume of mental energy required in radiology is something he didn't anticipate.
The first few months of radiology residency, according to Flash, are about finding out how to study effectively. He emphasised the importance of cost-effectiveness research to make oneself a better applicant.
Radiology, according to Flash and Jha, is a very cerebral field that requires trainees to go home and study to improve. Flash cautioned against mindlessly filling in standardized templates, suggesting they use them as a guidepost instead.
Flash also highlighted the cognitive stress associated with the number of imaging studies and the need to manage mental fatigue. He believes that greater collaboration with other departments, such as internal medicine and surgery, is beneficial, with radiologist-led standardized interactive teaching sessions being introduced into established clerkship curricula.
Radiology educators advocate for early and consistent exposure of medical students to radiology before their third and fourth year of medical school. Flash believes that clerkships in diagnostic radiology should be designed to be relevant and suitable for all medical students.
Outside of his medical career, Flash is a fan of Christopher Nolan films, enjoys travelling, exploring, cooking, playing basketball, exercising, and barbering. He interned at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and is currently pursuing interventional radiology at Penn Medicine.
Flash faced a surprising reality that radiology rotation wasn't what he expected. Despite the challenges, he remains passionate about his field, believing that radiology adds depth to any medical specialty.
