Disinformation propagation by Russian media outlets

In recent times, the German domestic intelligence agency, the BfV, has reported an increase in hostile activities, particularly in relation to the ongoing Corona pandemic. This surge in suspicious activities is not limited to traditional opponents such as Russia, China, and Iran, but also includes new actors on the global stage.

One of the concerning trends is the rise in economic espionage within Germany. The BfV has observed new actors, including Russian intelligence networks, engaging in economic espionage. A notable example is a suspected espionage network involving former Wirecard executive Jan Marsalek, acting as an intermediary between Moscow and Bulgarian agents, representing Russia.

Additionally, there is ongoing concern about organized cybercriminal groups targeting German companies through methods like spear-phishing and social engineering. While specific countries beyond Russia are not explicitly named in these contexts, the BfV is keeping a close eye on these activities.

Foreign intelligence services have been conducting technical preparatory actions for potential cyber attacks on the pharmaceutical sector in Germany. This poses a significant threat to the country's healthcare system and its ability to respond effectively to the pandemic.

In a statement, the BfV President, Thomas Haldenwang, acknowledged this escalation, stating that there is an increase in services conducting espionage against Germany or trying to exert influence. He further noted that these new actors are involved in economic espionage in Germany.

Interestingly, some attacks by opposing intelligence services no longer attempt to conceal who is behind them, possibly for deterrent effect. This shift in tactics could signal a new era in international relations, where covert operations become less common and overt aggression more prevalent.

However, it's important to note that opposing intelligence services have become more robust in their methods and are using violence to achieve their goals. This increase in violence is a cause for concern and underscores the need for vigilance and proactive measures to protect Germany's security.

Russian media have also been spreading disinformation and propaganda about the Corona situation in Germany on their German-language channels. This misinformation campaign aims to sow confusion and undermine public trust in the government's response to the pandemic.

As the world grapples with the challenges posed by the Corona pandemic, it is essential for countries like Germany to remain vigilant and proactive in guarding against hostile activities. The BfV will continue to monitor these developments closely and take necessary actions to safeguard Germany's security and interests.
