Protests in Indonesia reach a peak as Finance Minister's residence is broken into and valuables are stole - Disorderly demonstrations in Indonesia: Residence of the Finance Minister vandalized
In the past few days, Indonesia has witnessed a series of protests and riots that have been the most severe since President Prabowo Subianto took office last October. The unrest has been reported in several major cities, including the capital Jakarta, and the eastern island of Sulawesi's city of Makassar.
The protests were sparked by various issues, including the announcement that Indonesian lawmakers would receive a housing allowance almost ten times the minimum wage in Jakarta. This decision fueled public discontent, leading to demonstrations against low wages and what demonstrators perceived as excessive perks for lawmakers.
In Makassar, the protests took a violent turn. Demonstrators set vehicles ablaze and threw Molotov cocktails. City hall was stormed and set on fire, and at least three people were killed during the riots. The information about these incidents was provided by Rahmat Mappatoba, a city official who spoke to news agency AFP.
President Prabowo Subianto has expressed concern over the events, stating that there are signs of actions outside the law during the protests. He believes that if public facilities or private homes are looted during the protests, the state must intervene to protect its citizens. However, there is no information indicating that any current finance minister has recently had their apartment plundered.
The protests in Jakarta were also triggered by the circulation of footage showing a motorcyclist being run over by a police car at an earlier rally. This incident sparked outrage and led to the protests that took place on Sunday.
In a bid to combat child malnutrition, President Prabowo Subianto introduced free meals in schools. However, the funding for this program has led to cuts in other areas, which has further fuelled public discontent.
The Indonesian government is currently working to restore order and peace in the affected cities. The incidents during the protests in Indonesia serve as a reminder of the importance of open dialogue and understanding in addressing public grievances.
