Displayed for the first time: Hitherto undiscovered writings by Erich Maria Remarque unveiled at the Day of the Lower Saxons in Osnabrück
Erich Maria Remarque's Unpublished Advertising Work on Display
The Erich Maria Remarque Peace Center in Osnabrück is set to exhibit an unpublished collection of original documents from the author's time as an advertising copywriter. This collection, which was previously unknown, offers a fresh perspective on Remarque's work during the 1920s.
Acquired with the support of the Sparkasse Osnabrück Foundation, the collection includes various types of documents such as drafts, photographs, and small brochures. The exhibition, which will run from August 29 to August 31 during the 38th Lower Saxony Day in Osnabrück, focuses on a previously unexplored aspect of Remarque's work - his work in advertising.
During his time at Echo Continental, the magazine of the Continental Rubber Works in Hanover, Remarque worked closely with Wilhelm Lichtenfeld, who was responsible for the literary design of the company's communications. Some of the drafts in the collection were created during Remarque's time at Continental in Hanover, while others were produced later when he was working for Sport im Bild in Berlin.
The collection vividly documents Remarque's collaboration with Lichtenfeld, particularly on drafts for Conti balloon tires, a Sunday outing brochure, and photographs taken by Remarque with advertising slogans for Continental products. The exhibition provides a new perspective on Remarque's use of language in the context of advertising and industrial communication.
Admission to the exhibition is free, making it accessible to all. The Erich Maria Remarque Peace Center encourages everyone to visit and discover this previously unpublished collection, shedding light on an unknown part of Remarque's work from 1921 to 1924.
