Disruption of Train Services in Switzerland During the Autumn Season
In the coming weeks, several rail disruptions are scheduled across Switzerland and Italy due to various construction projects and maintenance works. Here's a breakdown of the affected lines and alternative transport arrangements.
Switzerland
- From September 6th-7th, passengers travelling on line R20 between La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle (Neuchâtel) will need to use the service and a replacement bus to Le Locle-Col-des-Roches.
- Between August 30th and September 13th, 2025, EuroCity trains between Domodossola and Milan will be cancelled. Replacement buses will run between Geneva, Martigny, and Milan, as well as between Domodossola and Milan.
- Various weekends of total interruptions are expected between Domodossola and Milan from October to December 2025, with replacement buses in operation.
- Trains will be replaced by buses between Payerne (Vaud) and Murten (Fribourg) for the repair of level crossings and preparatory work related to the replacement of a railway bridge from August 29th-September 1st and September 19th-22nd.
- Long-distance and regional trains will be replaced by buses between Lausanne and Palézieux (IR15) and between Lausanne and Fribourg (IC1).
- Trains will be replaced by buses between Villeneuve and Vevey (Vaud) due to aqueduct maintenance work on November 8th-9th.
- In Vaud, regional train traffic will be replaced by buses between Lausanne and Cully on September 13th-15th.
- On October 10th-13th, buses will substitute trains on the line between Visp and Brig (Valais) due to the replacement of two railway bridges over the Saltina River and work on protective walls.
- Trains on the IR90/95 lines will be diverted via Palézieux (journey time extended by approximately 30 minutes) on September 13th-15th.
- On October 11th-12th, trains will be replaced by buses between Chavornay and Yverdon-les-Bains due to track renewal work in Ependes (Vaud).
The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) advises passengers to consult the timetable online or in the SBB Mobile app before their departure during construction projects. For long-distance journeys on the east-west axis, passengers are advised to use the Pied du Jura line (via the IC5 connections).
Italy
The railway company that will introduce replacement buses in Italy between August 30 to September 13, 2025, and from October to December 2025 to replace train traffic between Domodossola and Milan is Trenitalia, organised together with the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB).
Passengers are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly and allow extra time for their journeys during these periods of disruption.
