Divergent Conditions in East German Building Sector
In the first half of 2025, the construction sector in Brandenburg and Berlin experienced significant growth, according to figures published by the Building Industry Association East.
The order intake in Brandenburg reached a nominal increase of 70.7 percent compared to the previous year, amounting to 2.4 billion euros. This figure represents a 65.9 percent rise when adjusted for inflation. Economic construction in Brandenburg grew particularly strongly, with its order volume more than doubling. Revenue in Brandenburg also increased slightly, with earnings rising to just under 1.7 billion euros, a nominal increase of 2.7 percent.
Berlin also saw strong increases in the construction industry. The order intake rose by more than a quarter to just under 1.8 billion euros, while revenue increased nominally by 4.2 percent to around two billion euros. Residential construction in Berlin drove demand, with an increase of 53.2 percent, and public construction also contributed significantly.
However, the picture in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt was more mixed. The overall revenue in Saxony was 2.9 billion euros, which was 1.5 percent below the previous year in real terms. In Saxony, the order volume for economic construction increased by 5.3 percent, but there were declines in public construction and residential construction. In Saxony-Anhalt, the order volume decreased nominally by 0.6 percent, with demand for public construction shrinking particularly sharply.
Despite these declines, residential and economic construction developed positively in Saxony-Anhalt. The overall revenue in Saxony-Anhalt increased by 4.5 percent to 1.3 billion euros.
CEO Robert Momberg stated that construction companies overall recorded better demand development than in 2024, with some segments not included. However, no specific details about the balance in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt were provided.
The Building Industry Association East represents around 260 construction companies with 20,000 employees in Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony, and Saxony-Anhalt. The association did not release any specific publicly available data or lists naming which construction companies in Saxony-Anhalt had the lowest revenues in the first half of 2025. Such detailed company-level financial information is typically not disclosed in public sources or aggregated reports found in the search results.
In conclusion, while Brandenburg and Berlin saw significant growth in the construction sector, the results in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt were more mixed. The Building Industry Association East continues to monitor the situation closely and will release further updates as they become available.
