Emmy-Nominated Documentary Scores Showcase Diverse Talent

The 73rd Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, held this year, saw a diverse array of nominees in the documentary-score category, showcasing the incredible talent of composers across the globe. Among the nominees are scores for documentaries about natural wonders, culinary masterminds, iconic figures, and historical figures.

In the BBC's "Planet Earth" series, the latest instalment "Asia" features a score composed by Jacob Shea and Laurentia Editha. The duo employed traditional Chinese instruments and overdubbed the strings of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, creating a captivating and immersive soundtrack that perfectly encapsulates the beauty and majesty of Asia's diverse landscapes.

Another standout score is Ilan Eshkeri's work for "Super / Man: The Christopher Reeve Story." Eshkeri aimed to capture the emotional impact of Christopher Reeve, incorporating themes for Reeve, his two great loves, and inspiration into his score. Eshkeri also paid homage to John Williams' iconic "Superman" theme, seamlessly blending it with his own compositions to create a poignant and memorable soundtrack.

The "Chef's Table" profile of José Andrés, a chef who has provided millions of meals in the wake of natural disasters since 2010, was scored by Duncan Thum and David Bertok. Tragically, Thum's house was destroyed in the Altadena fire while he was finishing the score. However, World Central Kitchen, Andreés' organisation, stepped up to provide meals for Thum and his neighbours during this difficult time. Thum was eventually able to meet Andreés weeks later at a Netflix event in New York and thank him personally.

Caroline Shaw, a Pulitzer Prize winner, composed the score for Ken Burns' four-part "Leonardo da Vinci" series. Shaw worked with three ensembles for the score: Attacca string quartet, Roomful of Teeth, and So Percussion quartet. Shaw's score was inspired by the subject's humanity and humor, and she created approximately 20 two-minute pieces based on the script.

Kara Talve and Anže Rozman, working under the direction of the Bleeding Fingers collective, wrote scores for NBC's "The Americas." The duo used unique instruments for almost every destination in the series, creating a soundtrack that perfectly complements the diverse and vibrant landscapes featured in the documentary.

Hans Zimmer's Bleeding Fingers collective also scored two nominated natural-world documentaries. The collective has been making waves in the industry, with their innovative and captivating scores becoming a staple in documentary filmmaking.

Despite the lack of publicly available information about the winners in the documentary-score category, one thing is certain: the talent and creativity on display in this year's nominees is truly inspiring. The scores for "Leonardo da Vinci," "Chef's Table: José Andrés," "Super / Man: The Christopher Reeve Story," and "Asia" are all worthy of recognition, and we eagerly await the announcement of the winners.
