Dortmund book presentation by Gamze Kubaşik and Semiya Şimşek about the NSU
In Dortmund, the Dietrich-Keuning-Haus played host to a poignant event, as Gamze Kubaşik and Semiya Şimşek shared their experiences in a premiere reading of their newly published non-fiction book. The book, aimed at readers aged 14 and up, serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of racism and xenophobia.
Gamze Kubaşik, a 40-year-old resident of Dortmund, lost her father in a tragic incident. On April 4, 2006, he was murdered in a kiosk. The perpetrators were initially not found, and rumours spread that Kubaşik's father was a drug dealer with connections to the Turkish mafia. However, the truth was far from it. Three years later, the far-right terror network "NSU" was revealed to have committed the murders.
Semiya Şimşek, too, has a tragic connection to this network. Her father was murdered in Nuremberg in 2000, a fact that came to light years later. Both women have been fighting for justice and against forgetting since the revelation about the NSU.
The book, titled "Ich erinnere mich" (I Remember), is a collection of touching memories, photos, and descriptions of their experiences. It aims to educate young people about the dangers of hate and incitement, and to warn them against such attitudes.
The event attracted almost 200 people, who were deeply moved by the reading. Gamze Kubaşik expressed her satisfaction with the turnout and the response from the audience.
