Dramatic Victory for Manchester United: Fernandes Secures Late Penalty Win over Burnley (3-2)

Manchester United secured their first win of the Premier League season in a thrilling encounter against Burnley at Old Trafford. The final scoreline read 3-2 in favour of the home team, with the match featuring a series of own goals and late drama.

The Red Devils found themselves on the scoresheet early in the own-goal department, as Josh Cullen inadvertently put the ball past his own keeper in the 27th minute. Bruno Fernandes was the scorer of United's second own goal, coming in the 96th minute, this time off the boot of Jaidon Anthony.

Burnley responded well to going a goal down, with Lyle Foster equalising for the visitors in the 57th minute. Jaidon Anthony then scored for Burnley in the 66th minute, giving the Clarets a brief lead. However, the lead was short-lived as Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty, awarded after Amad Diallo was tugged back in the box by Jaidon Anthony, to secure United's win at 96:10.

The penalty was United's fourth-latest winning goal in the Premier League since the 2006-07 season, while the 96th-minute strike was the second-latest winning home goal for United, after Scott McTominay's against Brentford in October 2023.

United's performance was reflected in their expected goals (xG) tally, producing 3.54 xG from 26 shots during the match. Burnley, on the other hand, managed just 1.2 xG from six attempts.

Scott Parker's Burnley fell to 11th in the table with their second defeat of the season. The current manager of Burnley, who took charge of the club ahead of the 2025/26 season, will be hoping for an improvement in results moving forward.

The win moves Manchester United up to ninth in the Premier League table, a positive start to the season for the Red Devils following the own-goal-filled encounter against Burnley.
