DSWV Urges Action Against 12:1 Illegal Sports Betting in Germany

The German Sports Betting Association (DSWV) has called for collective action to combat illegal gambling, urging players to check if sportsbooks are licensed by the German regulator (GGL) to avoid risky, unlicensed sites. The association warns that there are currently 12 illegal gambling sites for every legal one operating in the country.

DSWV president Mathias Dahms argues that the legal market offers crucial player protection, reliable payouts, and contributes to tax revenue. However, the association warns that illegal gambling sites pose significant risks to players, including lack of protection and a higher risk of addiction.

During the UEFA Champions League season, DSWV has stepped up its warnings to players. It reports that there are 382 illegal German-language websites focused on the event, compared to just 34 legal alternatives. The European Sports Security Association (ESSA) has also issued a warning to players, cautioning them to be wary of illegal betting sites to protect the integrity of the sport. DSWV encourages legal providers to increase their visibility during Champions League matches to attract more players to the regulated market.

DSWV believes that it's in everyone's interest, including regulators, operators, and players, to combat illegal gambling. By promoting awareness and encouraging legal providers to be more visible, the association aims to protect players and foster a safer, more regulated gambling environment.
