In a thrilling season opener, the Duke University football team triumphed over Elon with a resounding score of 45-17. The game was marked by a series of exciting plays and a stellar performance from freshman quarterback Darian Mensah, who achieved a career-high of 389 yards in his debut.

The first half of the game saw a tense battle, with both teams scoring a touchdown each. However, a dropped touchdown, a missed field goal, and a red-zone fumble prevented Duke from leading at halftime.

The second half, however, was a different story. Duke's offense came alive, scoring an impressive five touchdowns to pull away from a 10-10 game. The team's defense also shone, recording 10 tackles for loss during the game.

The scoring spree began with Jaquez Moore's 32-yard touchdown run, giving Duke a 17-10 lead. This was followed by a 27-yard touchdown catch by Andrel Anthony from Mensah, extending Duke's lead. Que'Sean Brown then returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown, further increasing Duke's advantage.

Sahmir Hagans, who caught a pair of touchdowns, was a key figure in Duke's second-half dominance. His first touchdown was set up by a 63-yard run by Anderson Castle. Hagans later scored another touchdown, thanks to a 5-yard pass from Mensah, redeeming an earlier mistake by A.J. Jones.

Elon's Landyn Backey scored a 3-yard touchdown, but Duke responded swiftly with another touchdown, this time a 17-yard pass from Mensah to Hagans.

Elon's starting quarterback Landen Clark completed 10 out of 16 passes for 101 yards, but his efforts were not enough to match Duke's offensive onslaught. Clark led Elon in rushing with 61 yards and scored a touchdown, but it was not enough to prevent the Phoenix from suffering a significant defeat.

Mensah, who completed 27 out of 34 passes with no turnovers, was the star of the show for Duke. Cooper Barkate led the team in receiving with 117 yards. Nine different players received passes from Mensah, demonstrating the team's balanced attack.

The victory was a promising start for Manny Diaz, the coach of the Duke University football team, who will be hoping to build on this performance as the season progresses.
